Dr Conor Hanley CEO Biancamed
BiancaMed is a medical technology company, which sells the world’s only convenient, non contact device for the monitoring of sleep and breathing in the home.
Monitoring sleep is a multi-billion dollar market opportunity globally, part of the growing $20 billion “sleeponomics” market. It cuts across the healthcare and wellness markets, especially as the need for a home-based solution in- creases thanks to a major growth in home care and prevention as well as an increase in lifestyle concerns extending from fitness and diet to quality of sleep. The need remains mostly unmet at the moment mostly because properly measuring sleep is very difficult to do in a convenient and cost-effective manner:
The clinically accepted way, although very comprehensive, is highly inconvenient and brief as it involves getting patients to sleep in Sleep Labs, which are mostly located in clinics and hospitals. Once there, patients are connected to a polysomnography (PSG) machine for a few nights at a cost of up to $1,500 a night, recording multiple physiological variables (scaled-down PSG).
BiancaMed has developed SleepMinder (TM), a unique, contactless sleep and breathing monitoring device combining sensor, associated software and comparative data. The device’s key USPs include:
o Accuracy: SleepMinder data is proven to be of the highest quality and comparable to the PSG gold standard data for both sleep apnea events as well as sleep/wake sequences;
o Cost: the product’s architecture with limited processing performed on the device itself and use of low-cost, off-the-shelf components makes it very cost-effective.
BiancaMed’s IP is protected by 8 patents (granted and pending) covering the basic ideas used in the product as well as more advanced specific innovations around sleep measurement. The proprietary algorithms used to translate the sensor signals into vital signs and sleep remain trade secrets but could also be patented.
In addition the company has developed the world’s first and only non- contact baby movement monitor- BiancaBaby- which monitors a baby’s smallest movement giving reassurance to parents.
The company’s go-to-market strategy is to help winners win by partnering with clinical and wellness device vendors who will embed BiancaMed’s technology, its sensors and software or in some cases rebranding BiancaMed’s own full solution, into their own products. BiancaMed also provides its technology on a service basis by providing sleep trials, sleep monitoring services, to fast- moving consumer goods companies and OTC and regulated drug manufacturers and their Contract Research Organizations (CROs).
BiancaMed is backed by a strong investor group including Seventure, ePlanet Resmed and Entreprise Ireland
